Bob Holland, MD, a well-known John Day physician specializing in family medicine was named the 2008 Oregon Family Doctor of the Year by the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Holland was honored at the Annual Scientific Assembly of the OAFP on Saturday, May 10th at Salishan Lodge. Dr. Holland’s wife, Karin, their two children, and a host of family members were on hand for the surprise announcement.
The award recognizes physicians who provide compassionate, comprehensive family medicine on a continuing basis; are involved in community affairs; and who provide a credible role model professionally and personally to their community, other health professionals and residents and medical students. Letters of endorsements of Dr. Holland were received from patients, colleagues, friends and medical students who have known him for the twenty years he has practice in John Day. They describe him as the epitome of a family physician – skilled, kind, attentive, and devoted to the well-being of his patients and community.
In addition to Dr. Holland’s clinical practice in John Day, he has been the Grant County Medical Examiner since 1989, the Grant County Health Officer since 1990, the Secretary of the Blue Mountain Hospital since 1995, and the Medical Director of the Blue Mountain Nursing Home since 1992. Dr. Holland has taught a host of medical and residency students at his practice, and for his devotion to mentoring student physicians, he received the Lewis & Ruth Carpenter Teaching Award from OHSU in 2002. Dr. Holland is also a member of the District #3 School Board and is an active supporter of school athletics and activities.
Dr. Holland was the 1999 President of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians and has been on its Board of Directors since 1997. He is currently the OAFP's Delegate to the American Academy of Family Physician.
Dr. Holland’s name will be submitted to the AAFP in nomination for the American Family Doctor of the Year.
