Draft of Resolution: Requirements for Maintenance of Licensure

WHEREAS, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) have, for many years, been leaders in encouraging members to maintain clinical skills and competencies, and

WHEREAS, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) has since its inception required its Diplomates to maintain their certification (MOC) through continuing medical education (CME) and recurrent testing, and

WHEREAS, the State of Oregon is one of only six states that currently have no requirements that reflect competency for maintenance of licensure (MOL), and

WHEREAS, the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) is encouraging all member states to ensure licensee's clinical and professional competency, and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) is working with the FSMB to develop pathways for physicians to demonstrate such competencies,

WHEREAS, the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) (formerly the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners) is planning to institute requirements (which might include, but would not be limited to MOC or CME) of licensees in order for individuals to demonstrate their clinical skills and professional competencies,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the OAFP support the efforts and actions of the Oregon Medical Board and the Federation of State Medical Boards, and continue to encourage OAFP members to certify and recertify for the American Board of Family Medicine, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the OAFP Delegates to the AAFP Congress encourage all member states to support Maintenance of Licensure and Maintenance of Certification endeavors of the Federation of State Medical Boards, the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
